Yup, (sticks were down and inward) that is the current intended command of the sticks to shut down the motors, albeit it may be unintentional/unintended as you have experienced. It would be a good idea for DJI to tweak the next FW upgrade for the aircraft to sense the altitude of the aircraft...

Jason, I've had the same exact problem and found that the ONLY FIX is to move away from any Android pad or phone and switch to an iPad (apple system). The Editor should be credited with this suggestion, not me. I followed his advise and I am glad I did. Everything came live immediately, pictures...

On point Editor! I fired up an iPad Mini 2 and everything came alive....also noticed decreased video latency and quality with the iPad Vs Android. Nice to have new features like zoom as well. Thanks for your guidance, i'm going to go fly today! ;)
