Guys,

Cannot wait to upgrade to I2.

Interested in ideas what peeps are using for storing/working from for all that RAW footage.

What works for you /set up etc

T

I edit my current project directly on my desktop. Then move everything off to a network attached storage. I use a pair of Synology DS1515+ Each has 5 6TB drives in a raid 5 with hot spare.
One is a mirror of the other. (Not that I am paranoid, had one fail with a bad power supply and bought a second one while waiting for warranty replacement. So ended up with two. The one on top is an older model I use for misc items.

WD 4TB My Passport Wireless Pro USB 3.0 WDBSMT0040BBK-NESN B&H

You can simply plug in SD cards and it will copy and empty it. Its also got built in WiFi and USB3 so you can use your laptop to transfer raw from an SSD (I have an I1 Raw).

It can operate as a WiFi hotspot so you can stream the MPGs from it to any connected device as well. Great for reviewing footage in the field.

And! :) It can perform as a battery pack to charge USB devices (phone or tablet).

Then when I get home, I plug it into my NAS (usb cable) and have the NAS automatically pull off everything. Works like a charm.

I tested it with a light load, and it indeed does last about 10hrs straight on and running off battery power. You don't have to run it off batteries but nice that it will and can for ease of use out in the field. Thats 10hrs of on time, doesn't mean it has to be on all all day, just on when you need to transfer.

I just wish DJI hadn't been such morons with the whole SSD thing on the X5R and requiring a PC/Mac running software to see the files. F'ng stupid move. Had they left the files in a normal directory structure, this wifi drive could easily be the only thing needed on a remote shoot as it will automaticlaly copy from the USB port too. But since its linux based and DJI has no linux software for the SSD reader, I have to take my laptop for no other reason than to copy the SSD.

We have been shooting and storing RAW footage for a long time and have lots of thoughts and experience with this. There are a lot of things to consider including what to use to get fast enough access to the data as you are editing and then fast enough storage for longer term use and ultimately long term archival.

Here are a few things we use:

Multiple 2TB SSDs for storing data that is used across multiple computers while editing projects (used in thunderbolt drive sleds)
Synology Rack Stations (as mentioned by @Fly Gary above). We use the 12 drive systems and put them in RAID 6
Mtape LTO tape back ups (also with thunderbolt connectivity). A nice way to archive for the long term.

If you want to chat more about any specifics, just let us know.

Also, if you have not made your I2 purchase yet, we would love to help with that as well.

Thanks!

Thanks again love seeing a bit of "gear porn"

Ask and ye shall receive. This is my main KVM station (along with my main edit workstation), which also has as a NAS, scratch-built from a bunch of used drives in used 1RU supermicro pizzaboxes as near-line storage (about 30TB), plus a 2TB PCIE high-throughput card (main scratch storage for editing), and an 8-drive SSD RAID 0 for near-line (but FAST) storage. The photo is blown out because of the HDR grading monitor center-of-picture.IMG_2052.JPG

Very similar setup as well. Piece of mind...

Someone else that I am sure has been accused of having raised flooring in their bedroom.

Ha, no raised flooring here. And ironically, that's not even the datacenter. That's just the KVM racks to control the DC (and my editing workstation and the media NAS), plus the equipment to run the media room. The really fun stuff is behind a biometric steel door.
