Autopilot Waypoint Mode

We are hard at work creating Waypoint Mode, but we need your feedback to make it great. Have an idea for what you would like to see in Waypoint Mode? Post your idea here and it may make it into the next release!

UPDATE: If you have multiple ideas, please post them in priority order.

Having Waypoint feature is much better than not. But Having to fly to the waypoints to set them in order to fly a precise grid or pattern is VERY time consuming and wasteful. Please develop a method to set up a flight grid with altitude, spacing, speed and camera auto-shoot and increments less of 2, 3 and 4 seconds. Look at Pix 4D, Drone Deploy or others as a model. In lieu of that, create a feature so we can set up the waypoints and flight plan on the pilot app before we take off.

Good idea to introduce at least a basic waypoint mode first with the option to develop an advanced version later.
Features.
Ability to pre program multiple waypoints by map selection
Specify height for each waypoint.
Option to have fixed camera heading camera point to next waypoint.
A set of grid or pattern templates.
Those features should satisfy most users.

Exactly my thoughts... Create a basic GS/Waypoint first.. Take a look at litchi/ultimate app or DJI own vision app for ideas of what a basic/general GS is... And then go from there... being able to set the heights to each waypoints, speed, banked turns, Saved missions, pre program missions, and the most important one... Making sure the 1st waypoint is as close as posible to home point(Phanton/I1 take off location) This will keep a lot of people from crashing their drones.. Or even better make sure you are at least 20 meters up in the air before you can hit Go/Start.

Hey all,
Autopilot is awesome by the way.

Isn't Zipline pretty close a Way Point mode? Its a two point way point mode it seems. Could you just add more points and step through them with the C1 or C2 buttons? Place them with the map pre flight just as you do in Zipline. Specify altitude and heading maybe for each point. Would take up a lot of screen space but a point entry table would cover that. That altitude would be relative to the calibration attitude set at the start of each session.

That way the balance of safety for the masses verses convenience for the pros is covered to a point. I think may be letting a fully autonomous waypoint system out on a consumer UAV like the Inspire is asking for a lot of pilot error crashes. Anyone with a few thousand can get one of these regardless if they have the skill to handle it. The same crowd can also download any of these apps. There is a lot to pay attention too even with the modes currently offered. The Inspire is kind of mid entry level mainly because of the ready to fly nature of it. The more complex craft take a lot of skill to just get off the ground from what I hear. Just some thoughts.

I really hope you don't intentionally dumb it down because some people are flat out stupid. You are not gonna fix stupid. Someone will build a bigger idiot. Don't make the rest of us suffer for it.

That's true for sure. I just hope they can find some middle ground. Make it useful but relatively safe.

I really like the idea of just adding onto the Zipline mode. It should be relatively straight forward and give people something to chew on while they work on the next version to really make it shine. I say do that and fix a few things in the interface. Maybe bring in some basic camera functions and we will be held over for a little while while you really polish the app. Just my $0.02 worth.

I second the camera functions. At least the histogram. You can set most of it in the DJI app before an Autopilot flight. The right settings wheel controls what ever you left it on when you switch apps I believe. The histogram would give some point of reference. Zebra lines would be good too. Not sure how complex that is to get working or even if the SDK allows access. We will see what they do I guess.

Why oh why are DJI trying to re-invent the wheel !!!! There is a perfectly good APP (for now) its called Ground Station !!!! while all the Inspire teckies get the act together, why not use that functionality for the Inspire 1. The latest firmware update is not really worth the wait, very disappointing !!!

Can they just not make GS compatible with the Inspire 1 ?

With regards to buying Autoflight logic: I purchased the App but can't figure how to buy the add- ons prior to the app telling me that my trial of the mode I'm using says its expired an now need to buy it- which in mid flight leaves me feeling a bit uncomfortable.Any suggestions?

There is a purchase button at the top of each Mode that is not already purchased, before you open the Flight Dashboard. It also shows the total number of remaining trial flights.

If you tap the More button on the main menu, there is a restore purchases option which allows you to activate any modes that you have previously purchase.

How far are you with the waypoint mode?

We will post updates when we have a better estimate on the timeline. At the moment we are going to be forced to do one more release before the version with Waypoint Mode because the next version of the DJI firmware (due out later this month) breaks backwards compatibility (due to a new iOS 9 requirement).

Will you be going through a Beta program with the software that supports Waypoint mode? If so, what will this look like? Who will be part of it, etc.?

There will be a beta for each new version of Autopilot, and by default, it will include the same testers as the previous beta. If those testers do not download the update in a certain time period, we will add more testers from the 1000s that are still on the waiting list.

Will we be sent an email when there is a new beta or is it just posted here?

TestFlight will send a notification yes, but we will also send out a direct email through MailChimp if you are signed up on the mailing list.
