Just wanted to jump in and say that I had the same issue working with a Macbook Pro trying to update my RC to 1.3. I tried a USB stick that I formatted using Disk Utility into Fat32 and the RC would not recognize the stick. I ended up grabbing a USB card reader that would accept microSD cards. I formatted the micro SD card using the camera on my inspire and then transferred the download of the 1.3 firmware update on it. The controller accepted that update.
