Disappointing Range

The phantom 4 pro can go 4 miles on either 5.8ghz or 2.4ghz. The inspire 2 should be able to do the same. The fact that you go from full bars for image AND TX to instant disconnect make me feel like something isn't right...

I agree, but let's face it, 6000 feet out and only 300 feet altitude you have a very shallow angle, around 3 degrees above the horizontal, that means that even those low trees full of birds that were flown over are going to be in the way along with needing only the smallest of movements of the controller to dramatically change the signal strength, but even so, I agree that I would not expect the performance to be all that different to the Mavic.

So, given the Mavic is on 2.4 not 5.8, I would do two things to level the playing field, make sure the transmission quality is reduced to the minimum on the I2 and set it to use 2.4GHz.

I would also suggest holding the controller so that the antenna are at 90 degrees to the ground, but that would hold for whichever aircraft was being tested.

How about the transmission quality setting though?
The only way I know to do that is to use custom channel, which I only use when flying next to another Inspire. I have played around with custom channels but find auto gives more reliable reception

Hmm.. perhaps I'm not understanding the way its used then, but it sure looked like you could turn down the transmission rate without having to change anything else...

Edit: OK, I took another look at this and I see what you mean, yes, you would have to pick a channel.

Ultimately though this may be the best way to get extreme distance with the I2 if that is something you need.

I don't think anyone heard - on the DJI GO 4 application screen tap the HD icon > Channel Mode Custom > Transmission Quality > reduce to 4Mbps (the selected range indicates 1.86 mi). So it says; where in fact if everyone has been doing this than the range is disappointing.

What are the different model numbers for the FCC and CE versions of the aircraft/transmitter ?
I´m in Europe (Norway) And my remote says: GL6D10A and aircraft: T650A

Presumably I should have the CE version with capped range, but strangely I can find only FCC markings on both remote and aircraft..

It is GPS based so it doesn't actually matter which one you have as it will limit itself according to where it is, not where it was purchased...

... and just in case it helps, those are the same model numbers as I have on the one in front of me that has both CE and FCC markings, along with all the other similar markings.

Thanks! Yeah I was thinking it might get some input from GPS but I had to ask as the I1 had different model numbers.

The manual (p. 40) does state to hold RC antenna at 90deg angle for 5ghz and 60deg angle for 2.4ghz. Not sure why this is so, but could explain part of your distance issue.

Noted in my first video in first post. But as shown in that video, no significant difference in range between 2.4 and 5.8, and really no difference in the antenna tilts.

End of discourse
I flew yesterday in custom. Truthfull forgot all about that transmission option because Range is not always an issue.
At 2 miles out on the i1 I still had fulHD bars while RC was down to 1 bar.
If HD transmission Range is an issue switch to custom. So Old School, forget more than most will ever know:)

I'm still amazed that people post videos like this on line when breaking a federal law and giving the FAA all the evidence they would need to fine or even prosecute.

What law is this video breaking? Can you point me to the US code or US regulation document that indicates what law he is breaking?

If you're referring to flying beyond line of sight or above 400 feet, neither of those are illegal for hobbyist flight. They are guidelines, not actual regulations. Nowhere in section 336 under hobbyist flight does it say you cannot exceed 400 feet or stay within vlos.

A quick Google shows you this, but here you go.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Frequently Asked Questions/Help

Breaking of govt regs IS breaking the law.

And with the new Part 107, the FAA has limited recreational flying to AMA designated flying fields. While I doubt they'd be able to legally restrict recreational flying to AMA field they can still make your life miserable for a while.

you might want to make sure you understand the law before misstating something as fact.

I'm actually pleased with my I2, although the Mavic has little better range. I flew the I2 today at a better location and got a couple of miles with no deteriation of signal. For the money, though, you'd think DJI could have given us at least the Mavic's range, especially when they advertise the same range.
Apologies also to the Drone Police, sorry for endangering all those people and wildlife.

That's was my original interpretation but it just don't add up. Too many contradictions.
Obviously the Faa has done nothing to enforce that rule. The leeway of contacting airports should never arise if the only place hobbyist can fly is an AMA field. Just doesn't make sense
